Starting in February, 2002, the HiRes Experiment is operating a mobile detector unit at Black Rock Mesa, just south of the City of Delta in Millard County, Utah. Currently, the mobile unit consists of a single standard HiRes mirror unit accompanied by a control module. Both are housed in shipping containers shown in the photograph below.
DISCLAIMER:
HiRes detectors use very fragile devices which can be destroyed by exposure to light. Therefore, we ask you not to drive to our site after dark in order to protect our equipment. For the safety of the people operating the detector, we ask you to refrain from pistol or rifle practice in the vicinity of our detector.
For now, HiRes is planning a series of observations lasting through the spring. The main activity is to observed scattered light from a UV laser beam with the following objectives:
- To test the viability of the current mobile detector design, based on shipping containers, for long-term deployment.
- To measure the concentration of particulate contaminants in the atmosphere in the region surrounding Delta, and to monitor its long-term variability.

Our operators will be sleeping at the site during the day, so we ask that you visit us only during guided tour hours listed below.
For the month of February, we are offering guided tours of our facility on the following days:
- Sat., Feb. 16, 4:00-5:30 pm
- Sun. Feb. 17, 4:00-5:30 pm
